No more IP address, no more port numbers; give your players the ability to launch your game straight from the desktop!
Note: this post is aimed at MUD Administrators.
Ever wonder if you are losing players due to confusing instructions on how to install a MUD client, find the right IP address and type in the correct port number? Ever wanted to give your players a direct link so they can just start playing? Connecting to your game should be easy.
Let’s review the typical process of on-boarding a budding new Mudder. Firstly, you point them to a different website to download some random software. Then ask them to type in some weird numbers hoping they will follow along and figure it out. If they didn’t get discouraged and all is correct they will get connected to your game eventually. It can turn a lot of potential players off if your instructions aren’t clear and accurate. You can’t possibly provide support for all the MUD clients out there though and in these days of point and click a lot of MUDs are doing themself a disservice by not providing any instructions at all on how to get people started. Thankfully the team at Mudlet have a better solution.
A Mudlet installer built specifically for your MUD. Download, install, play.
The installer downloads the latest release version of Mudlet, opens up your game profile and launches the player directly into your opening game screen. The process couldn’t be simpler. No more telnet addresses! Now combine that with a custom Mudlet GUI interface you’re sure to impress any wannabe player. And since we love all operating systems, the installer is available everywhere Mudlet is.
“How do I get one?” I hear you ask.
Installers are provided as a courtesy to all default games; those that have gone through the process of being vetted by the Mudlet team. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the wiki to become a default game and your installer will be available alongside the others, which you can link directly to from your own website. Becoming a default game propels you into the face of veteran Mudders and helps encourage new players to join in on the mudding fun.
Reach out to the team for a chat or open an issue (or PR if you can!) on Github if you fill the criteria.
